Bridesmaid by Chance by Meghan Quinn
“In the end, this is my favorite in the series and I enjoyed every second I spent reading.”
In the 3rd installment of her Bridesmaid series, Bridesmaid by Chance, bestselling author Meghan Quinn sets her eyes on Hudson Hopper, the oldest sibling of the Hopper family, and his new assistant, Sloane.
While it can be read as a standalone, you don’t want to miss the prior books: Bridesmaid for Hire and Bridesmaid Undercover. These books center on the world of the Hopper family in San Francisco, each focusing on a different couple but introducing and developing characters that appear throughout the series. The earlier books set the scene seamlessly – and you can go even further back into Meghan Quinn’s books, starting with A Not So Meet Cute, for access to all the inside jokes.
The Workaholic and His New Assistant
Hudson Hopper carries the weight of his siblings’ livelihood and the yearning for his father’s approval on his shoulders. He’s become withdrawn since leaving the family business and stays glued to his phone every waking moment, working constantly.
Sloane is experiencing the post-collegiate crisis of “Who am I and what do I want to do with my life?” Working as Hudson’s assistant is not it — though she admittedly enjoys the eye candy her boss provides.
Both Sloane and Hudson have issues with emotional attachments to people outside their families. Sloane typically feels nothing while Hudson worries he’ll feel too much. This book was so funny and sometimes caused the tiniest breaks in my heart when I think about how much they both need the connection they’re not getting.
A Marriage of Convenience
If tropes are what you’re after, the main one here is marriage of convenience. During a business meeting, Hudson volunteers Sloane as an emergency bridesmaid in a desperate attempt to keep a business deal on the table. Turns out he also needs to find a way into an exclusive London club, which has a requirement of being married. Well, Sloane is nothing short of business savvy when she comes up with an agreement to marry Hudson in exchange for a down payment on her home. Desperate times…
When we realize Sloane is more than the demure employee she presents, things get fun. We’ve all read that line — “he smiles at me and freaking winks” — but Meghan Quinn writes FMC’s who turn the situation around. Quinn gives us golden moments like the one where we find Sloane on her knees (*ahem* get your mind out of the gutter) proposing a marriage of convenience to Hudson — and she freaking winks!
Badass FMCs and Single Beds
In this interconnected world, I’ve met some of the most badass female main characters. They’re the most cheeky, strong-willed and downright hilarious women you’ll read about. Sloane, in particular, with her rambling inner and spoken dialogue, will have you giggling and feeling grateful that, for most of us, our thoughts won’t be printed for all to read. Thank god for fiction.
Once we land in London, things really heat up. Between schmoozing, dance lessons to prepare for a Bridgerton-inspired wedding and a shopping spree to dress appropriately for all the classy events, Sloane and Hudson find themselves losing the battle to resist one another while sharing a single bed. They are married after all.
Get Ready to Laugh and Cry
Have you ever had a job that is so intense you end up laughing uncontrollably with the coworkers you’re trauma-bonded to? Well, that’s how the interactions between Sloane and Hudson felt. They clearly had intense feelings for one another, but rather than confront them, they leaned into sarcastic banter — and we are all lucky they did. Sloane’s lack of filter under pressure and Hudson’s general state of panic had me in tears with laughter.
Don’t you worry, these two get their happily ever after — but not before I spent more time than I’m proud of crying over the conflicts they worked through. In the end, this is my favorite in the series and I enjoyed every second I spent reading.
