Actress Denise Richards recently opened up about her 2006 divorce from Charlie Sheen, revealing that the move negatively affected her acting career for some time.
What did Denise Richards say about her divorce?
During a recent appearance on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast (via TMZ), Richards opened up about the aftermath of her divorce from Sheen. According to Richards, she went through a lot in the following years, and had trouble finding a job for some time as a result.
“I went through so much with my divorce from Charlie,” said Richards. “That it affected my career, and I had a hard time actually getting a job. Because people perceived me as someone that was trying to take down Charlie Sheen, who was on this big show. And it was the network, and the studio, and it was a different time with the way things were.”
Richards and Sheen began dating in 2001, and were married a year later. The two have two children together, but in 2005, Richards filed for divorce from Sheen, as well as filed a restraining order against the actor, citing death threats made against her.
Their divorce was finalized in 2006, and Sheen was ordered to stay 300 feet from Richards, and was given supervised access to their children. In 2010, Sheen surrendered legal custody of his children to Richards.
Richards went on to say that, in the interim, she starred in the reality series Denise Richards: It’s Complicated, and was soon able to find work later on.
“It was hard, so I also had two daughters, I didn’t have Eloise at the time, and I had to work,” said Richards. “I did my reality show, and then it changed. Then, I was able to get back to working as an actress again, because I just had to be myself on that show. Because there was so much written in the tabloids about me that were negative.”
At the time, Sheen was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and was in the midst of starring in CBS’ comedy hit Two and a Half Men. Throughout the 2000s, however, Sheen struggled with substance abuse issues, and was arrested in 2009 for his assaulting his wife at the time, Brooke Mueller. In 2010, Sheen was also taken in by NYPD for causing damages to a hotel while intoxicated.
