Jamie Foxx has changed the way he works out after getting unexpected advice from his doctor. The actor and comedian said his doctor stopped him from lifting weights years ago. Foxx recently shared a funny story while talking about getting older. His new workout regimen is quite different from what he used to enjoy.
Jamie Foxx reveals why his doctor banned him from lifting weights
Foxx discussed his workout change with BET News’ Danielle Young. The 58-year-old said his doctor banned him from lifting weights a few years ago. “Man, shit. My doctor banned me from lifting weights,” he said. Foxx said he faced the change after he tried to get back into shape at age 48. He recalled that he spent approximately four hours bench pressing in one workout.
At first, Foxx thought the long workout had worked. “I kind of puffed up,” he said, before adding, “I said, oh yeah, I’m back.” That feeling quickly disappeared when he reached his car and saw his reflection. “I looked at the reflection of me… I said, what was it four hours for?”
Then, Foxx went to his doctor and got an answer he didn’t want. His doctor pointed to Foxx’s age before reaching for a bag of resistance bands. “He leaned over and grabbed a bag of bands,” Foxx recalled. “I said, what’s that? These are resistance bands. That’s your new workout plan.” Foxx said he felt embarrassed when he returned to the gym and saw other people lifting weights.
The workout change also carries extra meaning after Foxx’s serious health emergency in April 2023. He suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke while filming Back in Action in Atlanta. Foxx now brings his experiences with aging and recovery into Jamie Foxx: Take Care of Yourself, which premieres Oct. 7 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. He has also spoken about how his health scare changed his outlook on life.
His latest comments show why he now follows a different approach to exercise. For Foxx, the resistance bands mark a major change from the heavy lifting he once used to get back in shape.
