‘Moulin Rouge!’ Bids Adieu To Broadway With Big Box Office

‘Moulin Rouge!’ Bids Adieu To Broadway With Big Box Office

The final performances of Moulin Rouge! The Musical easily topped this week’s Broadway box office chart, grossing a big $2,336,973 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, a nice jump of $140,768 over the previous week. With original, Tony-winning cast member Aaron Tveit back as Christian for the engagement’s final two weeks, sales surged with his fans and last-chancers.

That $2.3M figure reps the second-highest weekly gross in the production’s seven-year run, behind only the $2,716,892 from the lucrative Christmas week during the musical’s first season.

Moulin!, a sell-out for the week, easily carried the top average ticket price of the 26 shows on the boards. With an average $223.46, the musical’s ticket average towered over the second-highest – Hamilton’s $188.91. The average ticket price for all 26 shows was $115.04.

Tveit, as Deadline wrote this morning, has also wrapped the male lead role opposite Jane Krakowski and Angourie Rice in Nice Eggs, the indie coming-of-age drama film.

Also noteworthy for the Broadway week ending August 30 was the number for the first post-opening week of the critically blessed Paranormal Activity, with attendance at 99% of capacity at the Wilson and a gross of $735,747 (and that’s with some opening week comps). Looks like the Wilson has a haunted hit in the house.

In addition to Moulin!, other sell-outs for the week were Hamilton (with a gross of $2,006,023); Just in Time ($715,568); and Oh, Mary! ($1,044,320). Coming close to sell out, with attendance of at least 97% capacity or more were Hadestown and MJ. Just shy of the 95% mark were Buena Vista Social Club, Operation Mincemeat, Schmigadoon!, The Book of Mormon and The Lion King.

Most productions saw at least some uptick in grosses over the previous week, with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child soaring $708,025 to $1,579,332 with the return of cast member Tom Felton following a vacation.

Bucking the upward trend with significant drops were The Rocky Horror Show, down $226,502 to $722,944 with much of the original cast having departed and Jake Shears not yet in place as Frank ‘N’ Furter (he arrives September 11).

Also taking a significant drop was The Lion King, down $229,489 to $1,591,927, a slip almost certainly the result of Kids’ Night on Broadway taking place last week, the annual promotion that lets kids in free with an accompanying adult. The family-friendly Lion King was no doubt packed with just such kids.

In all, the 26 Broadway productions grossed $25,753,182, down about 4% from the previous week and 16% from last year at this time (when the Labor Day Weekend fell within the week). Attendance of 223,867 was down just 2% from the previous week, and 6% year-to-year.

In the 14th week of the 2026-27 season, Broadway has grossed season-to-date $463,038,620, down about 6% from last year at this time, with total attendance of 3,790,503 down just 1% year-to-year.
