Theater counts: Can One Battle After Another hold the line against Swift competition?

Newcomer One Battle After Another debuted at the top of the weekend box office, securing $22 million in its opening volley on its way to a box office win. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio alongside a star-studded cast, is expected to relinquish its lead this coming weekend, as a wave of highly anticipated releases hits theaters, most notably Taylor Swift | The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, the latest cinematic spectacle from the pop icon.

While no official theater count for Taylor Swift | The Official Release Party of a Showgirl has been reported, the special event will be available for viewing at all 540 AMC Theatres locations, as well as at the Cinemark and Regal chains, at Cineplex in Canada, and in thousands of other movie theater screens throughout North America, and at approximately 8,000 locations worldwide in 110+ territories across the globe. It is the second collaboration between Taylor Swift and AMC Theatres Distribution, after 2023’s TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR opened in 3,855 theaters and scored over $261 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing concert film in history. The film, which runs from October 3-5, will premiere the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia,” along with behind-the-scenes footage from the music video shoot, brand-new lyric videos, and Taylor’s never-before-seen personal reflections on songs from her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl.

The widest release of the films we do have a count for is the latest from Dwayne Johnson with the release of The Smashing Machine. The film showcases the life of real-life amateur wrestler-turned-MMA fighter Mark Kerr, played by Johnson. The biographical sports drama highlights the once unstoppable force in both arenas, earning him the moniker “The Smashing Machine” for his brutal style and dominance in the ring. But behind the victories lies a deeply troubled man. Emily Blunt portrays Kerr’s partner Dawn, who dealt with the impact of his physical and mental scars and the cost of striving for greatness. Benny Safdie directs the feature, which will be available in 3,345 movie houses.

Making its second go in North American theaters this weekend is one of the biggest blockbuster hits in movie history, with the re-release of Avatar: The Way of Water. The film, which brought in well over $2 billion in worldwide funds, will make its way back into 2,140 venues this weekend.

Starting out in 1,650 theaters is the supernatural-horror feature, Good Boy. The movie follows a loyal dog who moves to a rural family home with his owner, Todd, only to discover supernatural forces lurking in the shadows. As dark entities threaten his human companion, the brave pup must fight to protect the one he loves most. The film is directed by first-time director Ben Leonberg and stars Indy (a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever) as the good boy himself.

Coming back to theaters for its 30th anniversary is everyone’s favorite friendly ghost, Casper. Fans of the young ghost of a boy who haunts Whipstaff Manor in Maine will get the chance to watch it again on the big screen, as it will be available in 1,100 theaters throughout North America.

Making its arrival in 1,038 cinemas this weekend is another horror film, Bone Lake. The film follows a couple’s romantic vacation at a secluded lakeside estate, which is upended when they are forced to share the mansion with a mysterious and attractive couple. A dream getaway spirals into a nightmarish maze of sex, lies, and manipulation, bringing terrifying secrets to light and triggering a bloody battle for survival.

Lastly, Focus Features will release the psychological drama, Anemone, in 865 theaters. The film follows a man who leaves his suburban life behind and ventures into the woods to find his estranged brother Ray, a hermit haunted by a murky and violent past. Daniel Day-Lewis stars in the movie, which is directed by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, making his directorial debut.

Rounding out the top five this weekend (depending on where the Taylor Swift event lands) is our current box office leader, with One Battle After Another retaining its current count of 3,634 cinemas. Adding seven locations this weekend is the other newcomer from last weekend, with Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie showing in 3,507 theaters. Occupying the fourth place spot is The Conjuring: Last Rites, entering its fifth weekend in 2,753 locations, and finally, The Strangers: Chapter 2, will once again be available in 2,547 venues in its second weekend.

Looking ahead to next weekend we see the debut of four new wide releases, including Tron: Ares and Roofman, which are projected to start out in approximately 3,800 and 3,100 theaters, respectively. Other films opening next weekend are Kiss of the Spider Woman and Soul on Fire. We will update those counts closer to their release.
