Theater counts: Thunderbolts fends off a duo of newcomers as it claims another weekend as widest release

Last weekend at the box office we witnessed another solid performance for front-runner Thunderbolts* as the Marvel film turned up over $32 million from domestic shows, crossing the $100 million mark on Friday. It currently enjoys a 13-day total of $136.8 million. Thunderbolts* reign atop the box office chart will likely come to an end this weekend, however, as the latest in the Final Destination franchise, Final Destination: Bloodlines, makes its way into theaters.

Opening in 3,523 theaters, Final Destination: Bloodlines follows a young college student who, plagued by recurring nightmares, heads back to her hometown to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle and save her family from the grisly demise that inevitably awaits them all. The popular franchise has acquired well over $263 million from domestic box office and nearly $658 million from global viewings from five previous installments dating back to 2000. The latest feature directed by Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky will be available on both traditional large-format screens and IMAX locations.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is the psychological thriller, Hurry Up Tomorrow. The film follows a musician plagued by insomnia, who is pulled into an odyssey with a stranger who begins to unravel the very core of his existence. The movie stars Abel Tesfaye of The Weeknd, as a fictionalized version of himself. The film also serves as a companion piece for The Weeknd’s latest album of the same name, which was created in conjunction with the film. Directed by Trey Edward Schults, the movie will debut in 2,020 locations.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the aforementioned current chart topper, as Thunderbolts* does drop below 4,000 locations for the first time (3,960 this week) but still finds itself as the most available film in the land. Occupying the third place spot is Sinners, adding 16 venues this weekend for a total of 3,518 movie houses. In fourth place is the third film in the Warner Bros. trifecta, with A Minecraft Movie still showing in a solid 3,357 locations. Lastly, The Accountant 2 loses 173 theaters from its schedule this weekend, but there are still plenty of viewing opportunities as the film is playing in 3,229 cinemas.

Next weekend looks to be a big one at the movies with the long-awaited releases of both Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning
and Lilo & Stitch. The former is set to debut in approximately 3,700 locations while the latter is projected to arrive in approximately 4,300 theaters across North America.
