Two newcomers placed one and two at the weekend box office, with Now You See Me Now You Don’t grabbing the box office honors with a three-day haul of just over $21 million, outperforming second-place finisher, The Running Man, picking up $16.5 million in its opening foray. Neither film will get close to touching the top spot for a second weekend, however, as a Wicked storm is brewing and about to blow onto the big screen.
Wicked: For Good is by far the main attraction heading into the Thanksgiving Day week. The film is the sequel to last year’s Wicked, a film that took in $112 million in its opening weekend, and went on to score nearly $575 million from domestic showings, for global earnings of $756 million. Most of the cast from the original film returns for the follow-up feature, again led by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland, respectively. The John M. Chu-directed feature will be available in 4,115 theaters, including IMAX locations throughout North America.
For those who aren’t Wicked fans, fortunately, there are still some solid options for seeing a new film in theaters this weekend. Another sequel is set to make its cinematic debut, albeit in a much different fashion than those in the colorful land of Oz. SISU: Road to Revenge will slice its way into 2,222 locations. The action-thriller is the sequel to 2023’s Sisu, starring Jalmari Helander along with Stephen Lang and Richard Brake.
Opening in 1,925 movie houses is the comedy-drama Rental Family. The movie stars Brendan Fraser as a lonely American actor who struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese “rental family” agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers. As he immerses himself in his clients’ worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality.
Rounding out the top five widest releases this weekend, we see The Running Man and Now You See Me: Now You Don’t holding steady with their opening counts of 3,534 and 3,403 theaters, respectively. Lastly, Predator: Badlands loses 625 locations, but is still widely available in 3,100 domestic theaters.
Due to the holiday, we see a couple of wide releases making their start on Wednesday this week. Another sequel, this time in the way of Zootopia 2, is projected to launch in approximately 4,000 locations.
