Weekend projections: Captain America lands with $100 million over four days on busy weekend in theaters

Captain America: Brave New World is coming in a little ahead of our Friday-morning prediction, landing with $88.5 million over three days, and a projected $100 million over four, according to Disney this morning. With Paddington in Peru also posting better-than-expected numbers, and all the returning films doing brisk business, thanks to a combination of the holiday weekend and a lack of competition with the Super Bowl, this is easily the best weekend for movie theaters for 2025 so far.

Here are the official studio projections for the three-day weekend (click the image for a full chart of all films reporting so far):

Disney reports a $192.4 million global weekend for Brave New World, and point towards that figure being 4% better than The Winter Soldier. But that comes with some fairly major caveats: it’s ignoring China, and looks as like-for-like markets at current rates. It also ignores the fact that Civil War did far more business internationally.

The bottom line is that Brave New World (and by extension the MCU) isn’t a four quadrant movie any more. While the age profile of the audience is fairly evenly split at 55% under 25, 45% over 25, the moviegoers are 63% male, and only 37% female.

The movies in the rest of the top 10 are notable for all beating our model’s Friday-morning prediction. Valentine’s Day looks to have really helped horror movies, with Heart Eyes jumping 20% from its opening weekend, and Companion down only 38% in spite of losing two thirds of its screens this weekend.

Also of note, Ne Zha 2 (哪吒之魔童闹海), having become the first film to earn $1 billion in a single country (it has earned $1.6 billion in its native China), is debuting in North America this weekend with $7.3 million. That compares to $1.2 million here for its 2019 predecessor.
