Who Is Juliette Lewis in New ‘Cape Fear’? Plus, Amy Adams & Patrick Wilson Talk Digital Horrors

What To Know

  • The new Cape Fear episode centers on digital-age anxieties, particularly on parents failing to protect their children.
  • Anna Bowden and her husband Tom struggle with family turmoil as their children become entangled with a mysterious woman.
  • The show leverages modern fears around online autonomy and predatory behavior.

In last week’s double-dose premiere of Apple TV’s Cape Fear, viewers were introduced to a new Max Cady (Javier Bardem), who was released after 17 years in prison when his former mistress confessed to the murders of his wife and unborn child. His former defense attorney, Anna Bowden (Amy Adams), is less than thrilled by the development. Now married to Tom (Patrick Wilson), the prosecutor who helped put Cady away, Anna is nevertheless forced to publicly celebrate his release as the face of SLJP, Anna’s organization dedicated to exonerating the wrongfully convicted.

Meanwhile, her son Zack (Joe Anders) finds himself exchanging messages with a mysterious woman after being ostracized by his friends following an incident at school, while her daughter Natalie (Lily Collias) is the family’s golden child, a title that seems to frustrate her. Also, Max finds his dream home.

All caught up? Good. Let’s dive into the chilly waters of Cape Fear. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 3 “Phantom Sensations”!

Over at the Bowden household, there appear to be a few randos hanging out at the Bowdens’ pool. Unthrilled with the gatecrashers (Ethan Embry! What are you doing here?), Tom goes to shoo them away. He has a few words with them, but keep that in your memory for later. It is probably important.

Meanwhile, Anna has Zack’s phone traced by Ray (Jamie Hector), who warns her it’s a bad idea. But determined to help her increasingly troubled son, she goes through with it. After returning the phone, she discovers explicit messages and poses as Zack to contact the girl behind them.

Using a logo visible on a plate in one of the photos, Anna tracks the girl to a local diner and meets Nevaeh Valentine (Malia Pyles). The encounter quickly turns tense as Anna demands that Nevaeh break up with Zack, threatening her with arrest for allegedly supplying drugs to a minor. Nevaeh isn’t intimidated, bluntly denies any connection to Max, and leaves Anna with more questions than answers.

At this point, even Tom thinks Anna is spiraling.

Zack isn’t the only Bowden child with tech issues. Nat goes to a pool party, and everyone seems a little off. As it turns out, a video of Nat doing yoga is being sent around at a party, and it looks like she sent it herself for attention, but she didn’t. Luckily, a young woman comes to her rescue: Nevaeh (though she is now calling herself Amber). The two hit it off, and sparks fly, as this mysterious young woman now has the interest of both Bowden kiddos.

TV Insider spoke to Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson about how the series uses the social media age to up the fear factor, playing on the anxiety of parents in the new digital age.

“I think that the nature of parenting has changed so much, given the digital life that our children have,” said Adams. “I think sometimes we feel that we’re on top, but they have this whole world of autonomy that’s open to them, that’s really hard to keep track of, and I think it creates opportunity for predators, wrongdoers, ill-intenders, to get to our children, and it feels harder and harder to protect them.”

“This show does a great job of playing into that fear from parents,” continued Adams. “Not only [from] outside sources, but sources which have no physical…They just exist in your child’s reality. It’s terrifying.”

Patrick Wilson in "Cape Fear," now streaming on Apple TV.

Wilson agreed that the show’s ability to adapt and use social media adds to the terror. “It makes it very prescient,” said Wilson. “Anytime you deal with updating something, you wonder, ‘How much are we going to use the current political climate, social climate, and technology?’ And I think this show embraced all of those in a very dangerous way, and I think that’s exciting to play.”

“I think you have to embrace the social media digital age because ultimately, as a parent, that is one of, if not the, most talked about and disturbing new additions to life that we did not have as children. Try as we might, I have no idea what our kids are going through,” Wilson revealed.

“It’s hard to keep up with the speed at which our kids are learning this new technology and being exposed to it,” explained Adams.

“You’re used to, as parents, going, ‘Hey, I was there, I know what that’s like. I know what it’s like to lose a love or do this or go through so many things.’ Our generation really doesn’t know what that kind of pressure is, try as we might, and that’s very difficult as a parent,” said Wilson. “Because we’re so used to, even if we don’t have the answers, trying to come up with the answers, but we just don’t have those answers.”

So, now Neveah has her manicured talons in both Natalie and Zack, as she makes out with Nat and Zack hangs on her every word.

Meanwhile…

Tom appears to be having an emotional affair with a coworker named Lexi (Margarita Levieva). While at the house, Zack keeps an eye on his father and his companion.

Max convinces Anna to represent him in a lawsuit over the attack he suffered while in prison. Although she is reluctant, her organization stands to receive a nice commission from any settlement, so she agrees and travels with Max to Atlanta. With assistance from a documentary crew following Max’s story, the two sides reach a $4.2 million settlement. During a triumphant moment, Max covertly grabs the warden by the crotch during a celebratory photo op, showing off his unhinged side to viewers.

Later, Anna and Max share a cup of coffee, where Max asks about the moment years ago when she started looking at him differently. Anna admits she made mistakes during his trial and apologizes for the role she played in his conviction.

Back at the hotel, Anna is approached by a mysterious woman who insists on seeing Max. The woman appears erratic, raising immediate red flags. The episode later reveals that she is played by Juliette Lewis, a callback to the 1991 film and a reminder that nobody does “unsettling” quite like Lewis.

Afterwards, Max receives a videotape from her at home. In the recording, she sings “Jingle of a Dog’s Collar” by the Butthole Surfers, and the performance appears to trigger a visceral reaction in him, seemingly causing physical pain as he destroys the room. The song suggests a connection far more damaging to Max than anyone realizes. It also marks the first known instance of the Butthole Surfers being weaponized for a prestige television show.
