Night one of Dion’s long-awaited comeback, a 26-date residency in Paris, featured a tearful “On Ne Change Pas,” an a cappella Everest and an opera aria under falling snow.

The house went dark 47 minutes behind schedule, and 30,000 people went quiet. Céline Dion walked out in a black gown, crossed her hands over her face like a prayer, and began to sing the opening notes of “On Ne Change Pas,” accompanied only by pianist Scott Price and four violinists. She had been gone six years.
Saturday night (Sept. 12) was the first of Dion’s 26 Paris nights, a residency that runs into May 2027 at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, the largest indoor arena in Europe. More than nine million people had entered the lottery for a shot at purchasing a ticket to see her perform.
Within a few minutes of walking on the stage in Paris, Dion, who hadn’t put on a headlining concert since sharing her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis with the public, broke a promise she’d made to herself: She cried. Moved by the emotion of the moment, she asked the audience if they could hear her heart beating. Among the tens of thousands in attendance were famous guests including Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Aya Nakamura and Thomas Pesquet.
During the concert, Dion revealed how she’s feeling and delivered ballads, blockbusters, and even a dancefloor section in her set. She also performed her 2026 single, the French-language song “Dansons,” live on stage for the very first time.

The Tears She Promised She Wouldn’t Cry
Dion cried through the opener.
She was so overcome during “On Ne Change Pas” that she lost her place in the lyrics. “Je m’étais promis de ne pas pleurer. Je ne tiens pas mes promesses” (“I promised myself I wouldn’t cry. I don’t keep my promises”), she told the crowd, wiping her eyes, and then said the tears were happy ones. The arena chanted back at her like a football terrace.
“Ça y est, on est là. C’était une promesse. Je suis debout sur scène, dans cette ville que j’aime tant,” she said. “Vous entendez les battements de mon cœur?” (“That’s it, we’re here. It was a promise. I’m standing on stage, in this city I love so much,” she said. “Can you hear my heartbeat?”).

“Je Vais Bien,” Three Words the Room Was Waiting For
Partway through the first act of the concert, Dion stopped to address the question hanging over the whole night. “There’s one thing I can tell you in three words: I’m doing well,” she said.
She talked about learning to live alongside her fragility and deciding to make it a source of strength. Then she turned it outward, telling the crowd you never know what the person next to you is going through and that everyone should take that energy and share it. That’s what music is for. The room let out its breath. Then she went into “J’irai Où Tu Iras,” and people started dancing, some of them spinning each other around by the hand.

30,000 Voices Take Over “My Heart Will Go On”
Introduced by a video of Dion drifting through a desert in a long gown, “My Heart Will Go On” arrived as the emotional summit of the night’s early set. The choristers took over the song’s famous flute intro, and then the crowd took it from them. All 30,000 sang the Titanic theme together. By the final flute line, nobody was in their seat.

The Electro-Disco Detour Nobody Expected
A mirror ball dropped, and the entire mood flipped. Dion tore into a run of dance floor material, with Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” bleeding into a heavily electro reworking of “I’m Alive,” then “That’s the Way It Is” and Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams.” Watching her chain these together, unleashed and improvising well away from familiar melodies, was the night’s sharpest left turn.

“Dansons,” the First New Song
Dion ducked offstage to change while a young violinist played a solo, and then the trapdoor at center stage opened. She came back in a black sequined dress for “Dansons,” her 2026 comeback single written by Jean-Jacques Goldman. Hearing the first new material of the evening gave the night a sense of forward motion, proof this would be a fresh chapter and not only a victory lap.

“La Wally” and the Falling Snow
Near the end of the concert came the biggest surprise: an opera aria, “Ebben? Ne Andrò Lontana” from Alfredo Catalani’s La Wally, the piece Maria Callas made famous. Dion sang it in full voice, and for her the choice read as a settling of scores with illness, proving her vocals are still intact.

The “All by Myself” Everest
A question hanging over night one of Dion’s comeback was whether she could still summit “All by Myself” the way she used to. She answered it Saturday night. Dressed in a black leather bustier gown, Dion built toward the famous final note and made the ascent a cappella, exactly like the old days. She exhaled, grinned, and looked genuinely moved as the ovation hit her.

A Gospel Choir Moves Mountains
Dion’s singers, dressed like a gospel choir, filed out 20 strong for “Love Can Move Mountains,” then the ballad “The Prayer” and “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” before carrying her through the refrain of “Je Chanterai.” With 20 voices behind her, this was the sound Dion has always been best inside.

“Pour Que Tu M’aimes Encore” Becomes Arena-Level Karaoke
The bouquet final could only be one thing. “Pour Que Tu M’aimes Encore” turned the arena into a 30,000-person karaoke event. The encores kept coming: “S’il Suffisait D’aimer,” which brought fans rushing to the front and Dion to her knees at the stage edge to greet them, and then “Des Milliers de Baisers,” a 2003 Goldman song, to close. Dion told the crowd to believe in themselves and their dreams, that everyone carries the power to love. Phones lit up the dark as the piano faded.
At 11:14 p.m. she looked back at the audience one more time and slipped behind the set, saying, “Merci d’avoir répondu à mon invitation. Je vous aime.” (“Thank you for accepting my invitation. I love you.”)
The show was over. The residency had only begun.
