If you remember the infamous 1993 Bobbitt case, more than three decades later, John Wayne Bobbitt says his side of the story has been overlooked. Now that Hulu is revisiting the case, Bobbitt has a simple question: Why didn’t anyone ask him what happened?
Hulu recently announced that Good American Family will become an anthology series. Its second season will revisit the 1993 case involving Bobbitt and his then-wife, Lorena Bobbitt.
Bobbitt told TMZ that Hulu never contacted him about the upcoming season. He said he would be willing to speak with producers and explain what happened during his relationship with Lorena.
According to Bobbitt, the series could give too much weight to Lorena’s account while leaving out police reports and other court records. He believes that approach would present “a curated story rather than the full truth.”
The case made international headlines in 1993 after Lorena cut off Bobbitt’s penis with a kitchen knife while he was sleeping. She later threw it from her car, and authorities recovered it. Doctors were able to surgically reattach it.
Bobbitt was later acquitted of marital sexual assault against Lorena. However, he says he has spent more than 30 years dealing with what he describes as a different verdict in the court of public opinion.
He strongly denies Lorena’s allegations of abuse and claims she abused him. “She was the abuser. There’s a lot of proof that she’s an abuser. Why is this false narrative consistently perpetuated?” he told TMZ.
Bobbitt says he wanted to leave the marriage and believes Lorena later portrayed him as an abuser after he asked for a divorce.
“Why doesn’t anyone just ask me what happened? I will tell them based on all the facts, details, court records, and the police report,” he said.
He is also working on his own manuscript about the case, giving him another opportunity to share his version of events.
TMZ reported that it contacted both Hulu and Lorena for comment but had not received responses.
