Hollywood actor Kirk Douglas and legendary director Stanley Kubrick had a complicated and often tense relationship marked by ups and downs, a fact well known among fans. Now, a new report claims that the late actor allegedly threatened the late filmmaker on the set of Spartacus.
Kirk Douglas reportedly confronted Stanley Kubrick on horseback over the famous “I am Spartacus” scene
During an episode of Turner Classic Movies’ (TCM) podcast The Plot Thickens, host Ben Mankiewicz recalled a heated dispute between Spartacus star Kirk Douglas and director Stanley Kubrick on the set of the 1960 historical epic.
The conflict began when the late filmmaker decided to remove the now-iconic “I am Spartacus” dialogue, written by screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, without discussing the decision with the late actor.
When the Lust For Life fame realized that the photographer had completely ignored his written memo urging the director to keep the line, he confronted The Shining fame while still on horseback and stood his ground.
Douglas demanded accountability, saying, “When I send you a memo about shooting a scene, I at least expect an answer. I sent you that note about the ‘I am Spartacus’ scene, and you haven’t even bothered to respond.”
American filmmaker stood his ground and replied, “That’s because I don’t wanna do it – it’s a stupid idea.” Douglas then escalated the confrontation by pushing his horse right up against Kubrick until he had made his point.
Hollywood actor Kirk Douglas and legendary director Stanley Kubrick worked together on two acclaimed films, Paths of Glory (1957) and Spartacus (1960). However, they often clashed on set over creative differences. Douglas was a powerful actor and producer, while Kubrick was a director who wanted to control every detail.
This often led to heated arguments between them. Although they never worked together again after Spartacus, their bitterness gradually faded over time. In their later years, both men deeply respected each other’s artistry and contributions.
