King Charles sends private well-wishes to Pope Leo XIV following lung cancer surgery
According to Hello! King Charles has led royal tributes and messages of support following Pope Leo XIV’s lung cancer diagnosis. He privately sent his best wishes to the Pope after his lung cancer surgery. Although the contents of the letter have not yet been revealed, King Charles and Queen Camilla met privately with Pope Leo at the Apostolic Palace during their rescheduled state visit to Vatican City last October.
The relationship between Britain’s King and Pope centers largely on global cooperation, religious ties, and mutual respect. The two leaders know each other through personal meetings and international engagements. King and the head of the Catholic Church held their first official meeting in Vatican City in October 2025. It marked the first time in nearly 500 years that the head of the Church of England and the head of the Roman Catholic Church prayed together publicly, following King Henry VIII’s break with the Catholic Church in 1534. Both leaders have also been vocal about environmental protection and caring for nature. Their prayer service at the Vatican focused on protecting the environment and preserving creation.
For context, King Charles is also battling cancer. Doctors discovered a separate issue of concern during his prostate examination and treatment. Further diagnostic tests confirmed his cancer diagnosis in February 2024. The royal family has not publicly disclosed the type or stage of his cancer, considering it private medical information. However, Buckingham Palace has consistently clarified that the 77-year-old does not have prostate cancer.
As for his current condition, the King is responding very well to treatment, and doctors have moved him into a precautionary phase. Although doctors have not yet declared him fully in remission, his condition continues to improve.
