New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani described his relationship with President Donald Trump as “honest, direct and productive.” The mayor made the comment one day before Trump attacked Mamdani’s property tax proposal on Truth Social.

Speaking in an interview with NBC News’ Meet the Press to mark his first 100 days in office, Mamdani emphasized the importance of maintaining a functional connection with the federal government. “He’s the president of the United States of America. I’m the mayor of New York City, and we know that so much of what the city needs is also dependent on a relationship with the federal administration,” he said.
Mamdani suggested that their shared ties to New York City have helped shape their interactions. “New York City holds a very special place for him as well as for me. We’re both from the same city,” he noted. He added that their discussions often go beyond formalities, touching on detailed local issues. “Our conversations are not just of the scale that is typical with the president, but also granular about even the things as specific as zoning law changes in midtown Manhattan,” Mamdani said.
Despite what the NYC Mayor described as productive engagement, Trump had a spat over policy. Donald Trump recently criticized a proposed pied-à-terre tax targeting high-value properties owned by non-residents. In a Truth Social post, he wrote, “Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance! The United States of America should not contribute to its failure. It will only get WORSE. The TAX, TAX, TAX Policies are SO WRONG.”
Zohran Mamdani responded by reaffirming his vision for the city. “The president and I both want this city to succeed. This is how you do it,” he said. The mayor has positioned the proposed tax as an important funding tool, estimating it could generate $500 million to support initiatives like expanding free child care.
