I think it’s safe to say we’re obsessed.
After a record-breaking box office run, Curry Barker‘s sensational horror film, Obsession, has crossed the $500 million mark. That officially makes it the highest-grossing original film of the decade!
In Curry Barker‘s film, after breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic (Michael Johnston) finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.
Obsession features Inde Navarrette in her breakout role…one that has already caught the attention of major studios. Not only does the actor already have another horror movie lined up in the trapped-on-a-rollercoaster flick, Invertgio, but she has been tapped to play Rogue in Marvel’s X-Men! Get it, girl.
In his review for Dread, Josh Korngut called Obsession “the next-gen horror masterpiece I wasn’t prepared for”.
Josh was right.
Obsession isn’t just good. It’s frightening as hell. Dread’s Brad Miska has referred to it as “the Jaws of dating”, a comparison I can get behind. With his feature, Barker captured the hells of dating for a new generation while also presenting a terrifying story of stolen agency at the hands of a guy who sees himself as innocent but is anything but.
The Monkey’s Paw-esque horror film had my audience screaming again and again. It deserves every ounce of success it has received. To see it cross the mark it has, well, that’s not just great for Barker and co.; it’s good for the horror genre as a whole.
Horror fans don’t need any reminding, but, for some reason, studios always seem to forget that horror sells. Yet, time and again, it proves itself as one of, if not the most profitable genres at the box office. Since the film’s release, we’ve seen numerous YouTube and meme properties snatched up in the hopes that they’ll become the next Obsession. With any luck, perhaps one of them will be.
The fact of the matter is, Obsession has been added to the long list of proof that horror will always thrive. And with movies like Barker’s slaying the box office, you can be damn sure that the genre’s more popular than ever. We love to see it.
