‘Odyssey’ $20M Tuesday; 2nd Weekend Could Best ‘Dark Knight’ Pics

‘Odyssey’ M Tuesday; 2nd Weekend Could Best ‘Dark Knight’ Pics

The Odyssey is on its way to a $20M Tuesday, we understand, and if it gets past $20.86M today, it will become Christopher Nolan’s best Tuesday ever at the domestic B.O., ahead of 2008’s The Dark Knight.

Currently, among all Tuesdays this year, the pic starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal and Mia Goth is second behind Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 5 ($23.69M, June 23). The Odyssey is currently second among all Tuesdays for a Universal movie behind Jurassic World ($24.3M, June 16, 2015).

The Odyssey will hold all Imax and PLF screens in its second weekend, charting a course for a 40%-50% ease in the $61.8M-$74M range. There’s a chance that the movie bests the second frame of Nolan’s Dark Knight movies, meaning either 2008’s The Dark Knight ($75.1M, -61%, the director’s highest-grossing sophomore frame) or 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises ($62.1M, -61% his second-highest). Superhero movies typically are front-loaded, which is reason why no one is expecting Odyssey to comp to the Dark Knight holds. Again, this is an by-appointment film with moviegoers eyeing the best seats, formats and showtimes. Oppenheimer, in a Barbie-dominated 2023 market, saw its second weekend dip by 43% with $46.7M.

No major studio dared to put a wide release this coming weekend, wedged between Odyssey and Sony/Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The latter is expected to outstrip the former’s 2026-record $123.5M opening for a live-action movie, and potentially even Toy Story 5‘s highest 3-day of 2026 at $159.6M. Instead, specialty distributor IFC has its TIFF acquisition, the dialogue-less noir Motor City from Potsy Ponciroli that stars Alan Ritchson, Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster and Ben McKenzie. Ritchson plays a tough guy who falls for a local gangster’s girl. He gets framed by Foster’s kingpin and then enacts a revenge campaign. Booked at 1,600 theaters, the outlook is in the low single digits. Twenty-nine reviews on Rotten Tomatoes stand at 72% fresh.

Bleecker Street has the Broadway live-capture feature production of Tony-winning Hadestown: The Musical at 1,944 theaters, and it could overperform. Currently, the pic counts around $5M in advance tickets sales and could file anywhere between $7M-$10M. Bleecker is releasing through its event cinema division Crosswalk and LD Entertainment. Hadestown: The Musical was shot in London’s West End last year and includes the five principals of the original Broadway company: Reeve Carney as Orpheus, André De Shields’ Tony-winning turn as Hermes, Amber Gray as Persephone, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice and Patrick Page as Hades. Pre-sales already have eclipsed Waitress: The Musical, which Bleecker released in 2023.

Neon has Nicolas Winding Refn’s Cannes noir genre pic, Her Private Hell starring Sophie Thatcher, Emmy nominee Charles Melton, Havana Rose Liu and Kristine Froseth. The pic, which premiered Out of Competition at Cannes in May, is booked in around 700 sites and is also eyeing a low-single-digit start. Refn has been roadshowing the movie across the nation with stops in L.A., Chicago and New York. It’s Refn’s first movie in 10 years, his last being 2016’s Neon Demon which was made by Amazon but released by the then-Broad Green Pictures before the streamer had a distribution arm. Her Private Hell tells the story of an actress and a former soldier whose lives are complicated by a killer in the city. The pic, which was largely funded by foreign sales, cost less than Neon Demon‘s $7.5M. Mubi bought out most of the world and has the prime Euro territories such as the UK and Italy, which are going in September. This weekend, Her Private Hell will bow in Russia, Singapore, Greece, Portugal and Turkey. Refn likes to divide: Critics coming out of Cannes gave Her Private Hell 49% on Rotten Tomatoes.
