The Machinery of Survival in Malta’s Darkest Hours

Voices on the Wind: Assault by Helena P. Schrader

Through vivid, gripping storytelling, Voices on the Wind: Assault brings home not only how many people it took to keep one tiny island fighting, but what the human costs of war truly are.

By early 1942, Malta was in trouble. The small British-held island sat directly across Axis supply routes to North Africa, which made it strategically valuable and an obvious target. Bombing had intensified. Food, fuel and aircraft were in short supply. And every ship that managed to reach the island had already survived dangers of its own.

That is the world Helena P. Schrader enters in Voices on the Wind: Assault, the first volume of a duology about wartime Malta. Rather than tell the story through a single hero, Schrader follows four characters whose jobs reveal different parts of the struggle. Together, they show how many things had to go right just to keep Malta fighting.

Four Lives, Four Views of the Siege

Wing Commander Robin Priestman arrives on Malta as an RAF intelligence officer. Because his job gives him access to the larger strategic picture, he quickly understands just how precarious the island’s position is. There are too few fighters, not enough supplies and, at times, not enough information or expertise to make sound decisions.

Flight Officer Candice Weld sees the conflict from below ground, working as a WAAF intelligence officer within Malta’s command network. Bombing initially rattles her badly, but she grows into her responsibilities as the pressure on the island mounts. Her work is painstaking: listening, interpreting and getting useful information into the hands of people who may have only minutes to act on it.

Flying Officer Edward “Ned” Nettleton brings the war into the air. A Beaufort torpedo-bomber pilot with a background in Coastal Command, his missions against Axis shipping supply some of the novel’s most exciting scenes, including one encounter in which nerve, improvisation and a certain amount of audacity matter as much as weapons. Before long, however, his war begins taking turns he never could have predicted.

And then there is Stephen “Stevie” Mackay of the Merchant Navy, who is tasked with delivering supplies. Someone has to carry the food, fuel and equipment across seas prowled by submarines and aircraft. And even after surviving their journey, supply ships face another deadly barrage once they arrive at their destination. When Stevie’s own voyage goes disastrously wrong, it becomes a test of judgment, responsibility and survival.

Courage Takes Many Forms, But Infrastructure Matters

The novel’s four storylines gradually make one thing clear: keeping Malta going is not simply a matter of brave pilots shooting down enemy planes.

Ships must reach port. Cargo has to be unloaded before bombs destroy it. Aircraft need fuel, parts and ground crews. Intelligence on the approaching enemy has to reach commanders in time to react. And those commanders have to make good decisions with too few resources and incomplete information.

Schrader is especially good at making such logistics suspenseful. A fuel line, a shipment of replacement engines or a few minutes of warning can matter as much as anything that happens in a dogfight. She corrects the idea that courage alone wins wars. In fact, sometimes courage is squandered because a system around it fails.

The War Beyond the Battlefield

For all its military detail, Assault is equally interested in the human element. Ned and Candice are drawn toward one another, though differences in class and expectations complicate the possibility of a future together. Robin and Emily sustain their marriage through letters amid wartime separation. Other relationships are strained or damaged by the uncertainties of wartime.

Those private stories keep the novel from becoming pure military history. The tensions that propel the novel aren’t simply whether Malta can hold out, but what prolonged uncertainty does to people who are trying to imagine lives beyond the next raid or mission.

Schrader is also unwilling to make every person in an enemy uniform interchangeable. At one point, Ned encounters an Italian officer whose conduct is far more humane than he expects. Such moments remind us that ideology and individual character are not always the same thing.

As the novel moves toward its close, the many pieces of Malta’s defense begin to fit together. Malta has reasons to hope, but little reason to feel safe. The second volume, aptly titled Siege, will have plenty of unfinished business to take up.

Through vivid, gripping storytelling, Voices on the Wind: Assault brings home not only how many people it took to keep one tiny island fighting, but what the human costs of war truly are.

Helena P. Schrader is the author of 22 historical novels and six non-fiction history books. She earned a PhD in History from the University of Hamburg and served as a U.S. diplomat in Europe and Africa. She has won numerous literary awards, including the Grand Prize for Fiction in the 2026 IndieReader Discovery Awards. Two of her titles have also achieved #1 Bestseller Status on Amazon in the categories Aviation and Wartime Fiction.

Schrader masterfully blends meticulous historical research with compelling storytelling. Her success can best be measured not by awards or positive reviews, but by the fact that witnesses of the history she describes praise the authenticity of her works. Battle of Britain ace, W/Cdr Bob Doe enthusiastically declared that Where Eagles Never Flew got it “smack on the way it was for us fighter pilots.” Traitors for the Sake of Humanity: A Novel of the German Resistance won recognition for its extraordinary sensitivity to a complex topic from the survivors of the military conspiracy against Hitler and the widows of some of those executed.

The dramatic siege of Malta in WWII caught Schrader’s attention years ago, and she has visited the island several times to conduct research, visit key sites, and better understand the people. She was unable to resist the temptation to combine a novel about the siege of Malta with another of her lifelong loves, the British Merchant Navy. Schrader has been an avid sailor all her life and served as a petty officer in the British Merchant Navy on sail training ships in her youth.
