A live-action TV series for The Phantom is in development for King Features, reports Variety.
Based on the classic comic strip created by Lee Falk, The Phantom debuted about ninety years ago, with the titular character credited as the first costumed superhero (sorry, Batman).
Reginald Hudlin (Candy Cane Lane) will direct and produce the series.
This isn’t the first time we’ll see a live-action take on the purple-costumed hero, though. Paramount Pictures released a feature version starring Billy Zane back in 1996. My childhood self loved it, but I can recognize that it, er, has not aged well.
As for the comics, a new Phantom comic book series launched from Mad Cave Comics in 2025 with plans for additional releases over the next two years.
Said King Features president, C.J. Kettler, “The development of a live-action series for the iconic comic strip The Phantom marks a pivotal expansion to meet the current cultural zeitgeist for this brand. By partnering with award-nominated director Reginald Hudlin, who possesses a deep reverence for the comic industry and source material itself, we are confident this adaptation will meet the high expectations of both longtime and new fans globally.”
