Theater Counts: Downton Abbey declares the widest release in its second weekend

The weekend box office saw newcomer, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Infinity Castle, take theaters by storm, slashing $70.6 million in its domestic opening weekend. The latest in the Demon Slayer franchise grossed $84 million for its 6-day domestic total. Its reign may be short-lived though, as a fresh wave of releases arrives this weekend, including romantic fantasy drama A Big Bold Beautiful Journey and psychological sports horror Him.

The biggest newcomer hitting the big screen this weekend in terms of theaters is A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell. Opening in 3,330 locations, the film follows two strangers who, through a surprising twist of fate, get to relive important moments from their respective pasts, illuminating how they got to where they are in the present.

Following right behind in 3,168 cinemas is the psychological sports horror film, Him. The film follows rising quarterback Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers), who suffers a potential career-ending injury after being attacked by an unhinged fan. When all hope seems lost, his idol and legendary quarterback, Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans), invites him to train at his private compound. This opportunity of a lifetime soon twists into something far more dangerous, pushing Cam down a disorienting rabbit hole that may cost him more than he ever bargained for.

Also opening in wide release is Angel Studios’ The Senior. The sports drama centers around 59-year-old Mike Flynt, who may be too old to be on a college football field, but not too old to feel the weight of unfinished business. After nearly four decades, he returns to his alma mater to take the hit that changed everything. He pushes for one more game, not for glory, but for the teammates he lost, the family he fractured, and the ending he still believes is possible. The Senior will debut in 2,405 cinemas throughout North America.

Rounding out the top five is Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, adding 17 theaters in its second weekend for a total of 3,711. The Conjuring: Last Rites will play in 3,413 locations, and box office champ Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Infinity Castle is set to strike in 3,342 cinemas.

Meanwhile, a special 30th-anniversary release of Apollo 13 will lift off in 200 cinemas this weekend. Also, the comedy Waltzing With Brando is set to open in an estimated 200 locations.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see another flurry of wide releases making their cinematic debuts. These include Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, based on the popular kids’ TV show, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, both starting out in approximately 3,500 cinemas. Opening in an estimated 2,600 locations next weekend is the latest in The Strangers franchise, The Strangers: Chapter 2.
