As the year draws to a close, a collective sigh can be heard from many of us. It’s been a difficult year for so many, but the year wasn’t all bad. This has been an incredible year for horror – some might even say it experienced a resurgence. While I personally believe the genre never truly died out, I can’t deny that it felt rejuvenated this year. So, without further ado, here are my top 5 horror picks of 2024 (in no particular order) that have left a lasting impression on me.
Smile 2
The highly anticipated sequel to the Smile franchise, aptly named Smile 2, is a thrilling addition to the elevated horror genre. For those unfamiliar with the concept, it follows a deadly curse that causes individuals to take their own lives once they’ve become “infected”. However, the true terror lies in how this curse manifests itself – creating a sort of schizophrenic effect and unleashing terrifying hallucinations on its victims. In the first film, we witnessed an everyday person fall prey to this curse, but in the second installment, things are taken up a notch as a superstar becomes its target. With the spotlight shining brightly on her and hundreds of eyes watching her every move, our protagonist appears more vulnerable and helpless than ever before. As the story unfolds and the curse takes hold, the stakes are raised even higher in this heart-stopping tale of survival against supernatural forces.
Mr. Crockett
Next up, the creepy and intriguing Mr. Crockett. A new name to emerge in the horror genre, Mr. Crockett is a compelling blend of two worlds. He presented himself as a children’s show host, but there was something otherworldly about him, ghost-like. Reminiscent of popular shows like Barney or Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, Mr. Crockett’s presence felt fresh but also unnerving. There was an air of playfulness to his character as well, similar to Pennywise the Clown or Freddy Krueger. Much like them, with a quick turn, he could become utterly terrifying. It was clear that he would leave a lasting impression on viewers. No word yet, but I’m sure it’s coming, and I can’t wait to see more of him in future productions.
A Quiet Place: Day One
A Quiet Place: Day One was another highly anticipated film of the year for me. As it started, I couldn’t help but feel like it wasn’t necessary, as it didn’t seem to add any new insights or depth to the monsters or world, we were already familiar with. Yet, as the story unfolded, I found myself completely absorbed in its gripping plot and emotional journey. This time, the setting shifted to New York City on the day of the attack, adding a sense of chaos and urgency to the survival of our protagonists. Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn’s performances were flawless, effortlessly drawing us into their characters’ struggles and triumphs. The city itself became a character, with its towering buildings and large population, both now symbols of danger and destruction. This film may not have added much to the overall concept, but it certainly delivered a thrilling and heartfelt experience that left an impact long after the credits rolled.
Terrifier 3
Next, another installment in the Terrifier series: Terrifier 3. While some may argue that this film was unnecessary, as it didn’t delve too deeply into Art’s backstory, I think we can all agree that we weren’t here for the plot. We’re here for the visceral, blood-soaked thrills that only Art the Clown can deliver. And deliver he did, like a demented Santa Claus serving up violence and gore on a Christmas platter. It’s clear that the Terrifier franchise is here to stay, and why shouldn’t it? With each film, Art cements his place as a beloved horror icon and I have no doubt that in just a few more installments, he will be considered one of the legends. But regardless of what comes next, I am eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Art’s twisted saga.
Long Legs
Last, Long Legs. A chilling film that left a lasting impression on me this year. It was like a twisted version of The Silence of the Lambs, with its deranged killer, unsolved murders, and timid female detective who’s actually very capable and intelligent. Set in the 90s, it almost felt like a tribute to the classic thriller. Nicholas Cage’s performance as Long Legs is truly unsettling, and he embodies the character’s unhinged behavior perfectly. His appearance, his voice…it all adds to the discomfort you feel while watching him on screen. I can only hope for more horror films from him in the future. This film demands to be rewatched, much like Silence of the Lambs does. Its eerie atmosphere and gripping storyline will stay with you long after the credits roll.
