Israel-Gaza Doc ‘NAZA’ Tops Million

Documentary NAZA, recently acquired by Neon mid-theatrical rollout, passed the $1 million mark this weekend. The Venice-premiering film, directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor (two of the Oscar winning directors of No Other Land) is eyeing $74.5k on 73 screens in week 4, for a cume of $1.07 million. Producer The Guardian had been self-distributing the explosive Israel-Gaza doc, which will continue to add more cities throughout October and November.

It’s a crowded specialty market. Neon‘s Once Upon A Time In Harlem is eyeing an estimated $50.2k for its second weekend on three screens. That’s a $157.3k cume for the generation-spanning documentary. The distributor’s Cannes Palme d’Or-winning drama Fjord is at a $333k weekend (in week 3) for a cume of $694k.

Other limited releases: La Bola Negra from Netflix had a limited expansion to nine theaters for a solid 3-day gross of $245k in week 2 for cume of $650k. Alamo Brooklyn was a top theater for the TIFF Audience Award-winner and these are solid numbers following a muscular debut last weekend. It’s the very first film the giant streamer is accompanying into theaters with official box office grosses.

The Only Living Pickpocket in New York from Sony Pictures Classics, critically acclaimed and starring John Turturro, opened in 6 theaters to $156k. AMC Lincoln Square led with $33k, boosted by Q&As.

Mubi released Cannes Best Director-winner, Paweł Pawlikowski’s Fatherland, at 4 theaters in New York and Los Angeles to an $83.8k opening weekend. Mubi noted strong audience demand with sold out shows across all four locations.

Moderate: Black Bear’s Wicker starring Olivia Coleman and Alexander Skarsgard is striking a chord with women, debuting to $5.75 million on $1,417 screens and a no. 5 spot.

Klara and the Sun (Sony) opened to $725k at 880 locations.

A Talent for Murder from Bleecker Street starring Helen Mirren as Patricia Highsmith debuted at 876 locations for a 3-day gross of $717.8k. Bleecker’s Alex Gibny’s doc Musk grossed $71k at 63 theaters for a $643k cume.

Jailer 2 from Shloka Entertainments hit $1.16 million in week 2 from 262 theaters for a cume of $7.2 million, as per Rentrak. By Nelson Dilipkumar. Stars Rajinikanth, Hrithik Roshan.

Wide: The fall indie crown continues to travel with A24’s You Can See Everything, at no. 2 this weekend in an expansion to 2,655 screens for an estimated gross of $19.5 million and cume of $45.1 million.

Fathom Entertainment’ presentation of Laika’s beautifully crafted stop-motion animation Wildwood followed at no. 3 on 2,779 screens with an $11.78 million debut.

Focus Features Sense and Sensibility, the latest adaptation of the beloved Jane Austen novel, on 2,572 screens in week 2, is at a $3.4 million weekend and a $16.7 million cume.
