Michael Douglas has been making the media rounds (and juicy headlines) in support of his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, and that included a stop by the ABC studios for The View on Tuesday (October 6).
During his interview with the panelists, he discussed everything from his long but unsuccessful efforts to get One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest to star his father, Kirk Douglas, to his revelation of an affair with regular costar Kathleen Turner to the true story of how Glenn Close demanded an audition for Fatal Attraction.
The Oscar-winning actor didn’t just field questions from the cohosts, though; he also poised one of his own.
In the middle of the discussion of his decision to reveal the Turner fling, Douglas put Ana Navarro in the hot seat over her publicly held political beliefs.
“I have to ask you something,” he said. “I’ve admired you now so much for the last couple of years.”
“Oh, now don’t tell me Michael Douglas admires me because I’m going to cry,” Navarro quickly said before the actor continued.
“I have to tell you,” he continued, “Why aren’t you independent? How can you still be a Republican?”
Navarro then accepted the challenge to explain her decision to remain a registered Republican, despite being a sharp critic of Donald Trump and other major Republicans who have supported him over recent years. “I’ll tell you why. Because I live in Florida, where the primaries are closed. And I want to be able to vote in the primaries and vote against those sons of b***ches… That vote makes a difference in the primaries.”
Douglas is an outspoken supporter of the Democratic party and even campaigned for Democratic candidates like Mike Bloomberg in the past. He previously said in 2024 of Donald Trump’s administration, “This is the worst time that I can remember. I was born at the end of World War II, but in my lifetime, this is the worst time that I can ever remember. There’s much too much conflict in the world… I am not happy to see the defense budgets increasing across the board, my country in particular insisting other countries increase their military budgets. I have a hard time understanding why, with all the AI and how intelligent we are as human beings, how we possibly can be having as many wars and conflicts as we are. It’s ridiculous. I realize that my country bears a lot of the responsibility to the chaos that exists in the world. I apologize and am embarrassed to my friends, be it my neighbors in Canada or Mexico or all the countries in the EU and NATO. I’m embarrassed and I apologize. But beyond that, I don’t even want to give the benefit of having more discusison about our president.”
